The Real Mosteiro de Nossa Senhora da Conceição or “Royal Monastery of Our Lady of the Conception” was founded in the second half of the fifteenth century. The Church, or “Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição” with a single nave, is lined with gilded carvings of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The back chapel or “Sala do Capítulo” is lined with sixteenth-century Moorish-style tiles. These tiles are one of the most important ceramic collections of this kind in Portugal. Above the tile panels are observed semicircular tempera paintings alluding to religious themes (St. John the Baptist, St. John the Evangelist, St. Sebastian, St. Clare, St. Francis of Assisi).
