“I hope you’re going to feel the pressure, the excitement and the glamour that reigns on the famous red carpet and that you will be feeling like walking it yourself through my images.” – Clotilde Richalet
Description of exhibition
Alliance française de Singapour presents Inside Cannes by Clotilde Richalet as part of the 4th Rendezvous with French Cinema. It is an exhibition on the Cannes Film Festival that aims to take you on a journey through the atmosphere of one of the largest film festivals in the world, known for its independent and artistic film selections.
Cannes and its Croisette, the red carpet and its glitter, its beach and starlets have appealed to all movies lovers since the 50’s. Since 2005, Clotilde Richalet has captured the magic of Cannes…in an unconventional approach. She has chosen black and white in reference with the timeless feeling that she attributes to the festival. Clotilde avoids close-ups but focuses on wide angle shots instead to immortalise the festival atmosphere and the ambiance of the red carpet. Much of the legends of Cannes has been built by the journalists and surly photographers, the cheerful and enthusiastic audience, the demanding protocol and many other details that make it a festival which is celebrated worldwide .
About Clotilde
Born October 22 1980, in Montauban, Clotilde Richalet understands the importance of light from childhood, and she describes it as the element that draws everything around us with shadows, luminosity, colours, darkness, etc. Born to parents who were doctors, her early interest before photography were literature, painting and music.
In 1998, she attained a Bachelors in Literature specialising in Latin and Ancient Greek. In 1999, she went back to France with an American diploma, after which she studied Art History for 3 years.
She joined ICART PHOTO in 2003 in Paris, mainly to study the technicalities of Photography, a method of expression that she feels breaks the barriers of language, in order to gain a stronger control over the medium. Clotilde attained a Degree in Photography in 2006.
